A lovingly converted family residence dating back to 1867, this boutique hotel in the fishing village of Stykkishólmur has lost none of its historic quality and period charm. A classic-meets-contemporary design scheme prevails in the ten small but comfortable guest rooms, all of which feature nautical decor, soft blue hues, wooden detailing, bespoke furnishings, modern amenities, and plenty of natural light.

Elsewhere, you’ll find cozy communal areas, including a library for swapping books and a lounge for enjoying homemade breakfasts and evening drinks. In the warmer months, the outdoor terrace is an ideal spot for relaxing with an Icelandic beer or freshly made smoothie while enjoying views of Breiðafjörður Bay and the nearby lighthouse. The hotel is a stylish base from which to explore Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a region famous for its dramatic volcano peaks, craters, lava fields, black and white sand beaches, caves, and waterfalls.

Rooms

Spread over three floors, the ten small but stylish rooms feature nautical decor inspired by Stykkishólmur’s maritime history. All have soft blue hues, wooden detailing, laminate flooring, patterned rugs, and plenty of natural light. Amenities include beds with organic Coco-Mat mattresses, modern bathrooms with power showers, iPod docking stations, and iPads instead of TVs. Some rooms offer views across Breiðafjörður Bay. 

Location

Overlooking Breiðafjörður Bay in the small fishing village of Stykkishólmur, you’ll be within easy distance of the Volcano Museum, the Library of Water, and the Sundlaug Stykkishólms. For views of the town and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the scenic lighthouse is a ten-minute walk along the coastal path.

Food and drink

Available daily in the ground floor lounge, the generous buffet breakfast includes organic eggs, pastries, homemade preserves, fruit, Icelandic salmon, granola, freshly made smoothies, tea and coffee, and à la carte options. The space doubles as an honesty bar and serves a selection of beer, cocktails, wine, and soft drinks until 11pm. While the hotel does not serve lunch and dinner, Stykkishólmur has a good variety of restaurants offering seafood or regional cuisine.

Facilities and activities

The hotel has a small library and offers a book swapping service for guests. While there is no swimming pool, you will find an indoor and outdoor geothermal pool as well as hot tubs at Sundlaug Stykkishólms, just a five-minute drive away.
