Beth, USA Specialist

It was experiences such as living for two years in Washington D.C, vacationing in the USA with her family as a teenager, followed by experiences such as a Camp Counsellor that fired Beth's love of the USA and the American way of life. Abiding memories of this time are July 4th celebrations in the capital, cherry blossom, skiing in West Virginia and a cabin vacation on the edge of Lake Christine in the wilderness of New Hampshire. Being in New York on 9/11 and witnessing the aftermath was an unforgettable and profoundly moving experience and one which has made her feel a strong connection with the USA.

After university the opportunity to relocate to the USA to manage the development of a UK-based cookie company proved irresistible. Initially, living in the beautiful and scenic Park City, Utah, she then moved to the bright lights and hedonism of Las Vegas. Keen to soak up as much of the opportunity as possible she traveled widely — highlights being San Francisco, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park. Lasting impressions of the USA for her were the well-defined seasons, her favorite being the autumn, big skies and the variety of breathtaking scenery.

Beth is keen to share her knowledge and passion to ensure that Audley clients experience the wealth of travel opportunities on offer in this wonderful country.

Amara Resort & Spa, Sedona

I recommend visiting - Sedona

My favorite destination in the southwest USA is definitely Sedona. Located just two hours south of the Grand Canyon it is nestled amid striking red sandstone formations at the south end of the 16-mile gorge that is Oak Creek Canyon.

Most come to discover the natural beauty of the area and to explore the nearby Indian ruins. In addition to the beauty of the canyons and cliffs, these majestic red rocks have also long been known for their ability to inspire and Sedona is nationally recognized as a spiritual mecca of the Southwest. Yoga, hiking and meditation are just a few of the activities regularly enjoyed by the locals in this artsy and creative community.

The town is a buzz with local eateries, bars, local art galleries, spas and plush resorts, making it the perfect, peaceful retreat. And due to low levels of light pollution there are incredibly clear views of the night sky.

The Fairmont San Francisco, San Francisco

I recommend staying at - Fairmont San Francisco

First Class

The Fairmont is my favorite hotel in San Francisco. Its exclusive location right at the top of Nob Hill means the views out across the bay and city are breath taking. It has a wonderful old world charm and grace with a rich history and beautiful decor that give it an elegant and luxurious feel, yet it is equipped with new world beauty and comfort.

My favorite aspect is the Tonga room and bar which serves delicious cocktails which you can enjoy in the surrounds of an artificial thunderstorm. Just a stone's throw from Japan Town and the heart of the city, make it the perfect base.

I'll never forget when…

My most memorable travel experience was hiking the hidden wonder of the Narrows in Zion National Park. The trail runs parallel to the Virgin River and the sheer size of the canyon walls that surround you is jaw dropping. Spending more than half my time knee-deep in water, traversing from one side of the riverbank to the other using a stick, I didn't plan on being wet or think there was the chance I'd step into a pool that was waist-deep, or deeper. The gorge, with walls a thousand feet tall and the river — sometimes just twenty to thirty feet wide with twisting channels — is one of extraordinary beauty. Hanging gardens and waterfalls burst from dramatically colored perpendicular walls while trickling water threads its way over moss covered boulders. My advice to those looking at this hike is that you've got to have that walking stick with you and do it in winter, thereby beating the crowds; me and my guide had the river to myself and only saw three other hikers.
