Fort Barli

Barli, India

Dating back to 1675, Fort Barli has been owned by the family descendants of legendary Rajput warriors for 16 generations, and has been brought back to its former glory. The family creates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and are on hand to explain the history of the property and show you around.

The pretty gardens and swimming pool are ideal for relaxing, especially if you’re staying here between busy cities, and the local village is fascinating to explore — wandering around is a great way to absorb rural day-to-day life.

OUR OPINION:

Rooms

The hotel is home to eight spacious rooms, each individually styled with antique furniture and traditional Rajasthani decor, some with traditional stained-glass windows. Due to the nature of the building, all rooms vary in shape and size, with some opening onto the courtyard and others tucked away with sit-outs overlooking the lawns. Whilst maintaining the sense of being in a historic fort, the rooms also have modern facilities such as fans and air conditioning, minibars and tea and coffee.

Location

Approximately halfway between the cities of Jaipur and Udaipur, Fort Barli is nestled in Rajasthan’s countryside and is ideal for a night or two to unwind. The sleepy village has a market on some days, but otherwise you’ll see local workers, school children and families going about their day-to-day business.

Food and drink

There is one restaurant at Fort Barli, which serves a mixture of international cuisine and traditional Indian dishes. Everything is prepared freshly, so share any preferences with the chef in the morning to ensure a fantastic evening meal. For village views, request to dine on the hotel’s roof terrace.

Facilities and activities

Bullock cart rides, morning yoga and massages can all arranged on request. Visits to local temples can be arranged, or leave the village behind to walk around Dev Sagar Lake, known for its varied birdlife. To cover more ground, the hotel can arrange bicycles for you, and a picnic if need be. In the hotel, there's a small swimming pool and complimentary Wi-Fi.
