Responsible Choice

We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

Located just south of Hermanus, Grootbos is a wonderful place to visit to experience and learn about the remarkable flora and fauna of the region, including the fynbos plant species found only in South Africa's Cape and the whales and sharks of Walker Bay.

Built on a hillside overlooking the bay and set amidst indigenous milkwood forest and resurgent fynbos, the lodge is a great base for walks or horse rides in the countryside, undertaken with expert guides to help you understand the delicate ecosystems in place. Coastal walks are also offered, either to indulge in some shore-based whale watching (in season) or to explore the caves and rock pools. For the more adventurous, boat trips can be made to view the whales up close, or to look for great whites in the notorious 'Shark Alley'.

Accommodation is split between two lodges: Garden Lodge; and Forest Lodge. Both lodges offer simple, modern comfort with strong African and Scandinavian influences. Garden Lodge is child-friendly and has multiple cottages including two-bedroom cottages which are ideal for families. Forest Lodge has free-standing private suites and an infinity pool in the main area with sweeping views of the ocean. Private decks allow you to appreciate the sunset alone or you may wish to join your fellow guests for some informal wine tasting before a delicious dinner.

Grootbos have been awarded some of the highest international accolades with regards to sustainable tourism. They hold a carbon negative status and have done since 2018. They also have a not for profit foundation which works to conserve the fynbos but also focuses on the training and skills development of local communities.
