Day 1 Edinburgh
Day 2 Edinburgh
Your driver-guide picks you up this morning for a day of exploring the castles and palaces in the environs of Edinburgh. Wander through the expansive Stirling Castle with your guide, before visiting the maze-like ruins of the royal residence and military base of Linlithgow Palace. Finish the day with a visit to the historically significant manor of Hopetoun House.
Day 3 On-board train (Edinburgh)
Day 4 On-board train (Belmond Royal Scotsman)
Today the train will head northwest through the heart of the Highlands, passing wild and dramatic mountain scenery along the way. The train will continue to the vibrantly hued fishing town of Plockton for an optional visit to Eilean Donan Castle — one of Scotland's most photographed castles.
Day 5 On-board train (Belmond Royal Scotsman)
Today the train will retrace its steps back through the Highlands giving you another chance to admire the rugged scenery. As you head south, stop for a whiskey tasting at one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland before continuing to Ballindalloch Castle. In the evening, enjoy tales and displays of traditional weaponry while on board the train.
Day 6 On-board train (Belmond Royal Scotsman)
Travel by coach to Rothiemurchus Estate, which is a beautiful expanse of Scots pine forest, lochs, mountains, rivers and glens, and known as the ‘gateway to the Cairngorms’. Either explore the estate with a guide or take part in a fishing or clay pigeon shooting excursion. Afterwards return to the train and continue south to Glamis Castle.
