Scale a frozen waterfall using ice picks and crampons in Jasper National Park.
The freezing winters in Jasper National Park sees the gushing waterfalls of summer turn to icy masterpieces surrounded by ice-covered lakes and snowy alpine forests. On this tour you’ll scale one of the many frozen falls equipped with ice picks and crampons.
The day begins in downtown Jasper, where you’ll be given special ice-climbing shoes and a few minutes to grab a packed lunch. You’ll then be driven to either Maligne Canyon, Tangle Falls, or Edge of the World for your climb — your ACGM-certified guide will pick the best place for the day’s weather conditions.
When you arrive at the site, you’ll be provided with your harness and helmet, and the group will help your guide carry the ice axes, ropes and other equipment to the first site. You’ll safely abseil down the side of the canyon, giving you the unique opportunity to walk along the canyon floor. Once you reach a suitable frozen waterfall, your guide will teach you about the safety, techniques and gear used for ice climbing, before you give it a go yourself.
The tour is about six hours, departing in the mid-morning and is appropriate for beginners and experienced climbers alike. The ice climbing runs daily through the winter months (December to March).
