Listen for the howling of coastal wolves as you set of in search of these elusive creatures by boat and at camp.
In the lush, mist-shrouded islands off northern Vancouver Island, deep in the traditional territory of the Tlatlasikwala First Nation, a unique creature roams the coastlines and pads through the deep moss of the forests: the coastal wolf. This exclusive to Audley, multi-day trip sees you travel by boat and land in search of these elusive animals.
On your first day, you’ll make your own way to Port Hardy for the night, with an orientation meeting in the evening to meet your group and guides, and learn more about what’s to come. The following morning, you’ll be picked up in the early morning to prepare for departure. You’ll travel by boat towards the Great Bear Rainforest, searching for the mysterious coastal wolves. In the mid-afternoon you’ll set up your camp and seek out more wolves.
Smaller than their grey wolf cousins and with noticeably red-tinted coats, coastal wolves—also known as “sea wolves”—are only found between the coastlines and islands of Southwestern Alaska and Vancouver Island. You indigenous guides will teach you about their culture and the lives of the wolves, using their knowledge to seek them out. At night you may hear the wolves howling to each other to send you to sleep.
Day three sees more time spent trying to spot the wolves both from land and the water. You may move islands for more viewing opportunities. Your final day allows for another morning of wildlife viewing, before making the journey back to Port Hardy for another night. All meals are included from breakfast on day one to lunch on day four.
