Becky visiting Porto, Portugal

Becky

Egypt, Portugal & Spain Specialist

The most exciting part of the year when I was younger was my family vacation abroad, so it was inevitable that I would end up exploring the world. I achieved a first-class degree at university in Tourism Management and started my journey in the exciting travel industry over a decade ago. I enjoy sharing my travel experiences, so I joined Audley Travel as a country specialist for Portugal and Spain.

My love of nature and hiking led me to Madeira, where I followed the network of Levadas that criss-cross through the luscious island and its dramatic coastal paths. I walked the Rota Vicentina path along the wild Atlantic coast of mainland Portugal, and the red cliffs of the Algarve’s Seven Hanging Valleys. I also had the wonderful opportunity of experiencing sections of the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain, something that I'd like to walk entirely one day.

Since I was little, I’ve dreamed of traveling to Egypt to discover its remarkable history and breathtaking landmarks, so I’m delighted to have expanded my portfolio to become a country specialist for Egypt too.

Q&A with Becky

Becky visiting the pyramids at Giza, Egypt

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

Seeing the pyramids of Giza is one of my most memorable travel days. The sheer scale of the pyramids took my breath away. Touching the stones of the pyramids is believed to bring different energy to each individual. I personally felt goosebumps and extremely emotional, especially as I’ve dreamed of seeing the pyramids since I was a child. Even now, I still can’t understand how the ancient Egyptians built such intricate and remarkable structures.

Becky in Ponta do Sol, Madeira

What's the best local dish you've tasted?

One of my favorite places is Madeira, not only because it’s such an incredibly beautiful island, but because of its delicious fresh food! I tried a popular Madeiran delicacy of black scabbardfish with banana and passionfruit sauce, known as peixe espada. Scabbardfish is caught off the deep waters of Madeira. Madeiran cuisine includes a lot of passionfruit and banana because the island’s unique climate and soil conditions allow them to grow in abundance. It was so refreshing, and the flavors complimented each other. Madeira also has a delicious passionfruit drink called Brisa. It’s a fruity and refreshing soft drink, ideal for the all-year-round warm weather. I now have a love for passionfruit.

Ciutadella, Menorca

Where would you love to travel next?

I’ve finally ticked off one of my bucket list trips — Egypt. There are so many destinations around the world that I’d love to visit. I’d love to explore more of one of my favorite countries, Spain. I’m fortunate to have explored Ibiza and Majorca, and would now like to explore its neighboring island of Menorca. I hope to one day snorkel along its clear turquoise coastline and explore its untouched natural beauty, as it has a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. I’d love to go further afield too. I dream of experiencing a safari in South Africa, discovering the rainforest in Costa Rica, and the tranquil coastline of the Maldives. The list is endless.
