Frank

Spain & Portugal Specialist

My first transformative travel experience was a solo endeavor to Cape Town, South Africa, during my college break. I have a vivid memory of conversing with a local resident in a small-town bar, captivated as I learned about the vast differences between their culture and way of life compared to what I had always been accustomed to. The conversation cemented an unwavering passion to explore the world and to continue expanding my horizons.

I am very fortunate to have spent time traveling with Audley through Spain and Portugal, which are two countries that will never cease to amaze me. Whether it’s the beautiful natural landscapes, the rich gastronomy, or simply the incredibly kind and prideful local tour guides, the region has so much to offer. I feel fortunate to play a small role in empowering others in their own exploration of such exceptional and incomparable destinations.

Q&A with Frank

Paella

What's the best local dish you've tasted?

Possibly my favorite dish ever, paella was a core highlight from my time in Spain. I was privileged to try paella for the first time in the city of Valencia, which takes great pride in being the birthplace of paella. I immediately fell in love not only with the food but also with the sharing and social aspect that comes with it. I’ve tried countless varieties from the traditional chicken and vegetables to the unique “paella negra” known for its distinct black color from squid ink. Recently, I even joined a cooking class in Seville where I was able to learn the process of preparing the dish and enjoy it handmade.

What's your most vivid travel moment?

My most vivid travel moment is hiking the 7 Hanging Valleys trail in Portugal’s Algarve region. We went early in the morning to avoid any crowds and truly embrace the opportunity to connect with nature. I will never forget the sounds of the birds chirping, the views of the intricate limestone formations, and the warm feel of the sun reflecting from the vibrant blue water. I’ve never felt so at peace as standing at the edge of a 100-foot cliff overlooking the golden sand of the beach, the stunning dome of the Benagil Cave, and the calming Atlantic Ocean.

Your best piece of travel advice?

My best piece of advice is simply to say yes. Organizing travel plans and visiting foreign countries can be very intimidating, but saying yes is the first step to unforgettable memories. When you are there, continuing to maintain an open mind and approach a new culture with excitement and curiosity will maximise your experience. Within reason, stepping out of your comfort zone, whether to try a new activity or consider a different perspective, is something I have found extremely rewarding in my own travels.
