Whale in Kaikoura, New Zealand

Whale Watching

Responsible Choice

We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

With a focus on education and preservation of the marine environment, this boat trip takes you out on the ocean in the search of sperm whales and other marine and bird life. The boats are equipped with Hamilton propulsion units designed to minimise underwater noise, exposed propellers prevent mammal strikes, and all of the toilets are self-contained so that they do not pollute the sea.

You’re given a safety briefing before the boats go out to sea for about three hours, maximising the opportunity to see a range of wildlife such as sperm whales, high-spirited dusky dolphins, the rare and endangered Hector’s dolphins, fur seals or royal albatross.

The commentary on the boat is informative, interesting and delivered with the aid of computer graphics which illustrate the underwater topography of Kaikoura; showing why whales and many other marine creatures are drawn to the area. The details of each trip is recorded to contribute to the continuing scientific research by the operator and subsequently supports research in the wider Kaikoura area.
