Part of the larger Al Hajar mountain range, the Jebel Akhdar area encompasses the Saiq Plateau, high mountain scenery as well as fertile orchards. Dramatic, sheer drops leading to excellent panoramas are typical of the Jebel Akhdar Mountains, which are particularly striking at dawn and dusk.
The area has been designated a nature reserve to protect its biodiversity, as despite its generally stark, dry landscape it is also home to flourishing orchards growing apricots, pomegranates and walnuts, among others. The area is also known for its rose water distilleries, some of which can be visited during the rose blooming season of March and April.
The highest mountain of the area — Jebel Akhdar (or 'Green Mountain') itself — is just under 3,000 m tall (around 9,800 ft). There are plentiful walking opportunities here and several small villages dotted about the mountains which can be interesting to visit to get a taste of local Omani life.
