Day 1 Johannesburg
Upon arrival in Johannesburg you're met by an Audley representative and escorted through immigration and customs. Your private driver then takes you to your hotel, which takes between half an hour and an hour depending on where you're staying and the traffic conditions. If you arrive during the day, you can spend the rest of today relaxing at your accommodation or exploring the area.
Day 2 Johannesburg
This morning you embark on a half-day guided tour of Soweto and the Apartheid Museum with your private guide. The experience allows you to learn about South Africa's apartheid regime and the impacts it had. In the museum are exhibits detailing the apartheid history, while a stroll through the Soweto district shows the contrast between poorer areas and the affluent northern suburbs of Sandton and Rosebank. During the tour you also visit Freedom Square and Nelson Mandela's former home. This afternoon, your guide leads you on a tour of the Cradle of Humankind and Sterkfontein Cave, where skeletons of some of the earliest humans have been found.
Day 3 Cape Town
After breakfast you're transferred back to the airport for your direct flight to Cape Town. The flight takes just over two hours and offers excellent views of Table Mountain. Your private driver then drives you to your accommodation, around half an hour away depending on traffic and where you're staying. This afternoon, enjoy a two hour private guided hike up Table Mountain, taking the cable car up to the upper cable station and then walking up the entire front table to Maclears Beacon - the highest point at 1,087 m (3,566 ft). The views across the city, ocean and mountains are incredible. You walk back to the cable car along a different route for a variety of vistas.
Day 4 Cape Town
Today your private driver and guide takes you on a tour of the Cape Peninsula, a stretch of coast with striking natural beauty and huge ecological significance. Highlights include the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the slopes of Table Mountain; a visit to Boulders Bay to see the jackass penguin colony; a funicular ride to the wild and windswept Cape Point, Africa's most southwesterly point; and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, home to several antelope and bird species and baboons. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs en route, and you pass through several pretty towns and villages where you may wish to purchase lunch.
Day 5 Cape Town
Explore the Winelands and sample fine wines on a private tour of the three main wine towns - Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch. You stop first in Stellenbosch, around an hour from Cape Town. The second-oldest town in South Africa, it has fine examples of Cape Dutch architecture. Your wine tasting here is coupled with chocolate tasting. You're then driven over the scenic Helshoogte Pass to Franschhoek, the country's culinary capital. Sample wines at one of the estates here before moving on to Paarl. Here you enjoy a final wine tasting before heading back to Cape Town, around two hours away.
Day 6 Eastern Cape Game Areas
After breakfast you're transferred back to Cape Town International Airport for your direct hour and a half flight to Port Elizabeth. Your private driver then meets you for the hour-long transfer to your safari lodge in the private Amakhala Game Reserve. This afternoon, enjoy your first taste of safari on a guided game drive, looking out for the Big Five and other wildlife. In the evening, relax with a drink in the boma area and gaze up at the uninterrupted night sky.
Day 7 Eastern Cape Game Areas
Spend today on safari - your lodge offers both a morning and afternoon game drive to give you the best chance of seeing a wide variety of wildlife, including giraffe, cheetah, zebra and lion. After your early morning game drive you head back to the lodge for breakfast and relax in your surroundings before joining your second game drive in the late afternoon. The latter part of this drive will be at night, giving you the chance to see nocturnal species such as rhino.
Day 8 Eastern Cape Game Areas
After your morning game drive and breakfast, you may wish to enjoy a bush walk with a knowledgeable guide. Your guide takes you into the veld in search of some of the reserve's smaller species and explains their role in the wider ecosystem. It provides a completely different perspective of the reserve and you can focus on spotting creatures you may otherwise miss, from reptiles to insects and birds. This afternoon, depending on water levels, you could join a sunset cruise along the Bushman's River. Floating along the water, you may see hippo, crocodile and a variety of birdlife.
