One of my favorite desinations has to be Olkhon Island within Lake Baikal. Everything about this island is overwhelming, from its remotness to the sheer scale of Lake Baikal around it. The scenery is breathtaking at every turn and the people are especially welcoming. Olkhon appeals to my love of remote scenery and a relaxed pace of life that can only be found in a place like this.
John, Russia, Central Asia, & The Silk Route Specialist
John's love of Russia started at school whilst studying Russian history, which culminated with a visit to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Following university he decided to indulge his love of all things Russian and started working for a Russian tour operator based in the UK.
Following this, he then joined Audley as it enables him to work much closer with people traveling to Russia and means he can spend all day talking about the country! Having been firmly bitten by the travel bug, he travels overseas as often as he can and tries to visit new places that he hasn't seen before.
One of his Russian highlights was visiting all of the sites that relate to the final days of the Romanov family in and around Ekaterinberg. When not thinking or talking about Russia, John is a keen chef and an even keener eater. He also enjoys reading and playing badminton.

John, thank you a thousand times over for an awesome trip!
All in all, the vacation was amazing. Everything surpassed my wildest expectations, especially the food, and I must say that I was pretty sad to go home. We did everything and more, with not a moment wasted. I am extremely thankful to everyone who helped to make this trip happen, especially our specialist, John. John, thank you a thousand times over for an awesome trip! you're the best! I would definitely recommend Audley Travel for anyone looking to visit Japan -- they won't let you down!
Simply one of the best welcomes I've ever had! From the outset I was treated like a returning family member and made to feel thoroughly at home for the duration of my stay. It's a great retreat from the noise of the city even though it's very central. One I'll return to time and time again.
I'll never forget when…
Diving into the ice-cold river that runs through the beautiful Tash Rabat Valley after a toasty Kyrgyz banya (sauna) was something that was truly memorable. Our hosts were very keen for us to experience this traditional element of their nomadic way of life and were delighted that we took part so enthusiastically. Not only does your skin glow for several days afterwards but you sleep like a baby almost immediately afterwards.
