The Old Stocks Inn, Cotswolds

The Old Stocks Inn

This stylish, boutique hotel with just 16 rooms is located in a historic 17th-century building that was originally a coaching inn. Rustic features such as exposed stone and low beams are juxtaposed with creative, contemporary design in the geometric fabrics, use of retro furniture and a palette of yellow, blue and dark gray. Rooms include large beds, complimentary minibars, coffee makers and hot water bottles for cooler evenings.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant which places a modern twist on British cuisine. The bar is relaxed and informal and serves craft drinks from nearby breweries. It is also where you'll find the friendly, resident dog. There is a also small library which leads to the 200-year-old walled garden terrace.

Rooms are spread across all areas of the hotel and offer views over the bustling square below or to the back across the terrace. Each room follows a similar contemporary style using a palette of mustard yellow, grays and blues with retro furniture and fixtures fitted around the original historic features. Rooms include coffee machines, complimentary minibars, smart TV, free Wi-Fi and many feature roll top bathtubs or rain showers. There is one family room which has a separate room with a triple bunk layout for children. This separate room is separated by a curtain for privacy and has its own TV and Xbox for entertainment.

The Old Stocks Inn has a prime position in the town of Stow-on-the-Wold, overlooking Market Square which was the site of the historic sheep fairs during the heyday of the wool trade. These days however, it has been replaced by fortnightly farmers' markets. The town’s original penal stocks are also located on the green to the front of the hotel.

Food and drink

There are a range of dining options, from a sophisticated restaurant with a focus on modern British cuisine, to a relaxing bar area with a private terrace, where a pizza oven operates during summer. For a relaxed choice there is a small cafe at the front which offers a range of snacks and lunchtime options and spills out onto the pavement in the summer months.

Our opinion

This small, boutique hotel is a top choice for us due to its wonderful historic nature yet contemporary style. The age of the building does mean that there are some uneven steps and low beams to watch out for.
