Sofitel Legend Metropole

Hanoi, Vietnam

The Sofitel Legend Metropole is a French colonial gem: grand and imposing and set on an enormous corner plot. The hotel is ideally located, just a short walk from the Opera House, the famous Hoan Kiem Lake and a brief cyclo ride from the historic Old Quarter.

Built in 1901, the hotel provides guests with fantastic service and facilities in a colonial and neoclassical setting. The property is divided between two wings, the recently refurbished Opera Wing, and the more historic and arguably more charming Metropole Wing. There is a huge choice of bar and restaurant options dotted inside and out, each serving up a differing taste of local and international cuisine.

OUR OPINION:

Over the past few years, there have been an increasing number of new luxury hotels opening in Hanoi. However, nothing quite equals the character or the reputation of the historic Metropole.

OUR RATING: Deluxe

Rooms

The hotel is split into two quite separately styled wings — the Opera Wing and the Metropole Wing. Within the more modern Opera Wing, the room choices are Premium, Grand Premium and Suites, the main difference between the rooms being size. The Premium rooms do not have separate showers and baths, which the Grand Premium and Suites do. In the Metropole Wing, the style is very different: very colonial, more wooden finishes and very grand. The room choices here are the Luxury, Grand Luxury and Legendary Suite. Again, the rooms get bigger depending on type and the Luxury rooms do not have a separate bath and shower.

Location

Although the Sofitel Legend Metropole is not as ‘centrally located’ (i.e. within the Old Quarter) as other options, it is not far away and with the help of the superb doorman, guests can easily walk, cyclo or get a taxi to visit this popular area. The hotel is set in the French Quarter, surrounded by other equally smart and grand buildings and is a quieter option than some of the hotels nearer to Hoan Kiem Lake.

Food and drink

The food options at the hotel seem almost limitless and certainly no guest will have time to experience them all! The buffet breakfast is expansive and of an exceedingly high standard, offering a huge range of Western and Eastern options. Some other dining options are the La Terrasse du Metropole for a French menu or the Spices Garden for Asian cuisine, but these are just a few among a myriad of other choices.

Families

Connecting rooms as well as babysitting services are available at the hotel.

Facilities and activities

This hotel really does offer everything you might expect from a city hotel. This includes a pool, spa, sauna, gym, laundry, babysitting services, free Wi-Fi, a currency exchange, hairdressing salon, cash machine, gift shop, airport shuttle and an historic underground war bunker with free historic tours for guests.

Accessibility

There is ramp and wheelchair access in the hotel as well as lifts.
