We want to get away for about a week in the October half term starting 24th October, somewhere with good reliable weather, where we can relax and go on interesting excursions. We don't want a long flight and we need something interesting for a 13 year old girl, where would you recommend?

Food stalls in the atmospheric Djemaa El Fna, Marrakesh, Morocco

Answer

North Africa can make a great destination for a family vacation in October half term, as it is relatively close to the UK and the weather is very pleasant at that time of year. For the sheer variety of activities, my suggestions would be Morocco or Egypt.

Just under a four hour flight from the UK but a world away in lifestyle and atmosphere, Morocco has long enticed travelers with its bustling souqs and glorious landscapes. For families, one of the highlights is the Djemaa El Fna in Marrakesh, an open space that comes alive at night, packed with entertainers and soothsayers. Activity highlights which I am sure your daughter would also enjoy include shopping in the souqs, taking a horse drawn carriage ride around Marrakesh, camel trekking in the Atlas foothills or just relaxing in the picturesque old Portuguese coastal town of Essaouira.

Brimming with exciting places to discover, Egypt is also an excellent destination for families. Only a five hour flight away from the UK, there are many activity highlights throughout Egypt that I am sure you would all enjoy including camel rides, visiting the famous pyramids, taking a trip on a felucca down the Nile or even just spending some time relaxing at the Red Sea.
