Robinson Crusoe Island

Selkirk's Lookout Hike

Follow in the steps of Alexander Selkirk, the famous Scottish sailor who was stranded here alone for four years and four months in the early 1700s.

The trek starts in the town of Juan Baptista and follows a steep trail up behind the town. With some stunning spots to stop and admire the view and after a steep hike you will reach the spot that is renowned for being the lookout that he climbed to every day. A stunning panoramic view of the island is the reason he chose this spot to search for possible rescue ships that could take him away.

There are two plaques that commemorate his stay on the island and that provide the best viewing platform. You will then descend through the lush vegetation into the Villagra Valley before returning to the village for lobster empanada.

This excursion takes around four hours and is fairly strenuous.
