In my early 20s I moved from small town USA to small town Germany, and I quickly learned the life-changing opportunities that came from stepping outside my comfort zone and stepping into new cultures.
Exploring Germany is a never-ending experience full of history, architecture and lively traditional festivals. Castles perched in the hillsides, gorgeous Rhine River landscapes and vineyards as far as the eye can see, makes Germany the perfect travel destination.
I first fell in love with Italy when my husband and I backpacked our way through the country, exploring Italy’s vast regions, phenomenal food and ever-changing landscapes. Known as the world’s culinary capital, Modena balsamic vinegar, fresh pasta, and Amalfi Coast lemons are some of my favorite tastes in Italy.

What's your most vivid travel moment?
While spending time in the beautiful town of Garmisch, at the base of Germany’s highest peak, the Zugspitze, I went on an adventurous tandem paragliding trip. The experience began with a cable car up the Alpspitz mountain to the take-off hill, where unbelievable views appeared. Once secured, I followed my pilot's command to run off the cliff's edge, allowing for the wind to catch our sails. This thrilling experience turned into a gentle, gorgeous float surrounded by the German-Austrian Alps, with views of Lake Eibsee. It was one of my most adventurous experiences.
What's the best local dish you've tasted?
After wandering through Ortigia’s historic open-air food market, with its vibrant colours of fruits, vegetables, and spices, fresh proteins, and famous Sicilian cheeses, and picking out fresh foods with our guide, we returned to her home to cook in her beautiful kitchen. Everything was delicious!
Your best piece of travel advice?
Trust the detours, from bumps in the road to unexpected changes, navigating in a new country requires a bit of flexibility and patience. Offline translations may result in coffee with a stranger; taking a wrong turn could lead to meeting a 6th-generation shepherd; and facing sudden challenges may lead to newfound personal growth and prove that you can tackle the world with just a little patience.
