Tallinn Old Town, Estonia

Exploring Tallinn from Helsinki with a private guide

Cross the border to explore Estonia’s characterful capital and its medieval core with a guide.

Pastel-painted merchant houses, onion-domed cathedrals, a Baroque-style castle, and park grounds popping with vivid flowers… Tallinn is a city where history feels tangible, its terracotta roofs and medieval spires looking as though they’ve been lifted from the pages of a fairytale. You can catch a scenic two-hour ferry across the Baltic Sea from Helsinki to spend a day visiting the Estonian capital, exploring its highlights with a guide. (This crosses another country off your list for good measure — don’t forget your passport).

Your driver will make sure you arrive at the ferry terminal in time for your departure, then you can relax and soak in views over the cobalt-blue waters. Your private guide will meet you once you reach the shore, first leading you on a leisurely stroll through the city’s well-preserved Old Town. You’ll visit Town Hall Square, whose cobbled heart is framed by medieval buildings painted in pastel yellow, pink, orange, and turquoise. Here, you’ll find the oldest town hall in Northern Europe, as well as the oldest continuously operational pharmacy in Europe.

Your guide will tell you about the background behind key buildings you pass, from former guild houses to medieval church towers. One highlight is Toompea Castle with its 18th-century Baroque façade, now the location of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament). You’ll also visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which was built in the late 19th century when Estonia was part of the Russian Empire, evidenced by its distinctive onion domes. Then wander through the palatial grounds of Kadriorg Park, passing bright flower beds, fountains, and the peaceful Swan Pond.

Afterwards, you’ll return to Helsinki by ferry, where your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.
