Belmond Maroma

The Mayan Riviera, Mexico

Belmond Maroma is a lovely, luxurious hideaway nestled on the edge of the turquoise Caribbean Sea on a stunning stretch of white sand beach. Owned by the Belmond chain, the hotel has 65 rooms and suites, three swimming pools and a beautiful extensive spa tucked among lush gardens, cooled and shaded by coconut palms on one side, open to the dazzle of sun and sea on the other. The hotel does accept families, but remains a relatively peaceful spot.

There is a tequila and ceviche bar and two restaurants — one that's more casual open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the other more expensive fine dining, serving Mediterranean-style cuisine with a pre-Hispanic Mexican twist. Although there is an all-inclusive hotel next door it is fairly discrete.

OUR OPINION:

A beautiful hotel with a fabulous location, though some of the rooms are in need of updating. From time to time, service in the restaurants can be variable and food and drinks are definitely on the more expensive side at this property.

Rooms

The sumptuous rooms emanate tradition in their decor with thatched roofs and whitewashed walls. All the rooms are individually decorated with hand painted tiles, soft wool rugs, original art and dark wood furniture. There is a choice of either a king sized or two twin beds accommodating up to two guests, either adults or children. Each room has a private terrace and hammock to relax in with garden or ocean views. As the hotel draws on elements of connection to nature there are no TVs in any of the rooms.

The suites have a separate living area, king-size beds and luxury sunken bathtub. Junior suites sleep two guests and Master suites can accommodate either three adults or two adults and two children.

Location

The Belmond Maroma sits right on the shore of the white sands of Playa Maroma, flanked by lush jungle and turquoise water. Cancun airport is just 40 km away and if you are looking to explore or shop, Playa del Carmen is about 15 minutes away and costs approx. $20 in a taxi. The resort is in the perfect place to experience some of Mexico’s great heritage sites, mysterious underwater cenotes and poolside relaxation.

Food and drink

The aptly named El Restaurante, takes a modern approach on traditional Mexican cuisine serving guests an alfresco beachside breakfast and handmade traditional light lunches and candlelit romantic dinners on the sand.

El Sol is the hotel’s laid back ocean grill, taking flavors from the shores of the Caribbean Sea. Locally caught seafood and freshly grilled meat are served with perfectly matched wines from the award-winning cellar.

For a relaxed beachside cocktail or an apéritif on the sand, guests can take a stroll down to Freddy’s and the talented bartenders will be able to rustle up a refreshing drink or two. There are a few exceptional dining experiences to be had at the Belmond Maroma, such as a dinner with tequila pairings to learn more about the tastes and creation of the local spirit, a K'áa'k night where a sumptuous buffet of flame grilled fish and meat is served, or intimate private dining in a location of your choosing.

Facilities and activities

The onside Kinan Spa offers private treatment rooms where guests can indulge in a spa treatment using indigenous botanicals and natural ingredients, such as the honey from the local Melipona bees. Attached to the spa is the Yoga and Wellness retreat for guests to harmonize both mind and body.

Scuba diving, sport fishing, kayaking, parasailing, sailing or golf can also be arranged. There are also two tennis courts, a fitness center, and the offer of a 45-minute complimentary bike tour through the resort's jungle to learn more about the natural wonders.

The hotel can organize activities in the local area with highlights being cenote snorkeling, a trip to the Maya ruins or the Sian Ka’an Biosphere.
