Overlooking a peaceful bay and surrounded by trees and vineyards, Pocinho Bay is a beautiful setting to enjoy time relaxing on Pico or exploring the area. Originally a wine estate, a series of buildings constructed from lava stone have now been transformed into six rooms and two villas with a central common area. Each area of the property is uniquely appointed with art pieces from the owners’ travels, a blend of South American, Asian and Oceanic art. The surrounding land is a protected natural area, meaning you’ll likely be sung to sleep each night by the unique, if garrulous, call of the Azorean shearwater bird.
The spacious rooms offer comforts such as TVs, air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi, although the true benefit of staying at Pocinho Bay is enjoying the pristine landscape. You might wish to swim in the hotel’s outdoor pool, or make your way across the street to the natural swimming pool tucked into the bay. There are also several walking paths throughout the property making their way through the vineyards behind the villas.
The hotel does not have a restaurant, but does serve a simple buffet breakfast of local meat, cheese, fruit and cereal each morning from 8-10am. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the main city of Madalena, about a ten-minute drive away.
Rooms are spacious, constructed from the lava stone that is so emblematic of the island. Each room is uniquely decorated with art pieces from the owners’ personal travels, giving each room an eclectic but warm feel. Each room offers TV, air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi, though due to the lava stone construction the signal can be spotty at times.
Pocinho Bay sits overlooking a peaceful bay with little else around, lending to unspoiled views over the water and little noise other than native wildlife. Though its location feels a bit remote, it’s an easy ten-minute drive into the main town of Madalena to enjoy restaurants and the waterfront, or just over half an hour to the whitewashed villages in Lajes.
Breakfast is served from 8-10am each morning and offers a selection of fruit, cereal and local meat and cheese. There is no on-site restaurant for lunch or dinner, though there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in nearby Madalena.
Guests can enjoy a dip in the natural swimming pools just across the street from the hotel or do a few laps in the hotel’s own outdoor pool. There are also several walking trails around the property making their way through the vineyards. For those looking to relax, there is a comfortable common area at the heart of the property with books, couches and a hammock to lounge in as well as a coffee machine.
Removed from the larger towns in a quiet spot on the water, Pocinho Bay is a perfect choice for those looking to relax and enjoy the peaceful landscape of Pico.
