This charming tented lodge has been furnished in a colonial style, with the main lodge evoking an old-world ambience that harks back to the early days of safari exploration. Sweeping views over the surrounding plains can be enjoyed from the lodge’s elevated deck, where you can sit and watch game visiting the waterhole or take a dip in the sparkling pool.
The traditional-style canvas tents overlook the bushveld, providing all the excitement of sleeping out in the wild while still offering comfort.
The friendly staff deliver an efficient and personalized service, and the guides enthusiastically share their knowledge of the area’s wildlife on game drives and bush walks, giving you a real appreciation for this incredible land.
We like this comfortable yet traditional tented camp as it offers something different from the predominantly lodge-based accommodation elsewhere in the reserve. Its simplicity and colonial ambience makes you feel like an early safari explorer.

Photos of Chapungu Luxury Tented Camp
Each of the tented suites features an en suite bathroom and a private outdoor bath with views over the savannah. They are connected to the main camp by pathways and offer peace and privacy. Both air conditioning and overhead ceiling fans keep the tents cool, and their green canvas helps them to blend in with the natural surroundings. A few of them boast romantic four-poster beds, and all have a private deck where you can relax while soaking up the bush atmosphere. Simple but comfortable, they offer an authentic safari experience.
The camp is situated in the heart of Thornybush Game Reserve, within the Greater Kruger National Park. A diverse range of wildlife species live in this private reserve, including the ‘Big Five’, 507 bird species, 114 reptile species and 34 amphibian species. The surrounding landscape is dominated by open savannah, making for excellent game viewing and beautiful scenery to enjoy while relaxing at camp.
Food and drink
Meals are served together, allowing guests to share stories from their day. Breakfast is enjoyed either at camp or out in the bush, with tea/coffee breaks also included in game drives. Lunch is served late in the afternoon, and at sunset you can enjoy sundowners and snacks surrounded by remote wilderness. Returning to camp, you’ll enjoy a three-course meal in the boma, out in the grounds or inside the lodge before gathering around the campfire. The camp also has its own wine cellar.
The camp only permits guests aged 12 years and over, and there are no additional activities offered for younger guests.
Facilities and activities
The lodge itself has a curio shop and a pool, while the nearby Thornybush Game Lodge — just a few minutes’ drive away — offers spa treatments for guests of Chapungu. For an additional cost, traditional dance performances are held, as well as drumming classes. Guests can also arrange hot air balloon safaris and helicopter rides over the bush.
