Matt started his career in travel more than 13 years ago as a commercial pilot. Not wanting to miss the action on the ground, he soon changed gears and began organizing group travel to tropical destinations in the US and Caribbean. As he developed a preference for more off-the-beaten path destinations in his free time, he jumped at the opportunity to shift his focus to Southeast Asia by joining Audley in 2013 as a founding member of their Boston based office.
Through extensive educational trips he has significant travel experience throughout the region including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, as well as the well-known stopover cities of Hong Kong and Singapore.
Some of his most memorable trips include island and beach hopping in Thailand, sunrise ballooning in Myanmar, trekking up four volcanoes in Indonesia, visiting the ancient temples of Angkor in Cambodia, trying the street cuisine in Vietnam, and sleeping under the stars in the remote jungles of Borneo — one of the last places in the world where you can see orangutans in the wild.
Matt’s expertise ranges from memorable honeymoons to those seeking an ‘off the beaten track’ experience. As a former pilot, he also has an extensive knowledge of airline routings and the aviation industry, often finding his clients hidden specials.
We have traveled quite a bit and have worked with a number of different travel companies over the years, and as a result I feel confident in sharing our highest praise of Matt and the Audley team.
Scott and Nancy Perlson traveled to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia for 19 days in December 2018, organized by Matt
From our first interaction with Matt inquiring about doing this trip, to the wheels of the plane touching down at O’Hare after almost three weeks abroad, our experience has been incredible. We have traveled quite a bit and have worked with a number of different travel companies over the years, and as a result I feel confident in sharing our highest praise of Matt and the Audley team. Our trip was made even more extraordinary because of the professional care and attention to detail that allows a trip with so many moving parts to come off seamlessly. Thank you!
I'll never forget when…
My most memorable experience in Thailand was jumping in the water with the elephants in Kanchanaburi. My guide arranged a one-on-one experience after the other tourists left the camp. Not only did I get to enter the river where the elephants were bathing, I also got to ride one of them out of the water with the careful guidance of its mahout. This experience would have never happened without the personal knowledge of my private guide.
