Najd Al Meqsar, by Sharjah Collection

Fujairah, The UAE

Perched in the Khorfakkan range of the Hajar Mountains and part of the historically significant Wadi Shie archaeological site, Najd Al Meqsar is a restored heritage village repurposed as a boutique, adults-only hotel. Guest rooms are within the traditional Kareen houses that date back over a century and are constructed from silt and stone with thatched roofs, blending them into the surrounding rock-strewn landscape. Excavations in the village have uncovered inscriptions depicting camels and horses that date to 2,000 BCE, suggesting millennia of human presence in the area.

Views stretch out across the mountain passes and lush forests from every house, while the interiors exude a rustic yet sophisticated craftsmanship. Rooms featuring hand-hewn wooden beams and rough stone walls are adorned with vintage handicrafts and tonal rugs and throws. The onsite Wishi restaurant serves international and local cuisine while boasting staggering views across the mountains from both its terrace and indoor seating areas. Hiking trails abound in the surrounding mountains, taking you past a plethora of historical forts and towers.

OUR OPINION:

A unique opportunity to stay in a restored historical property, high in the mountains of Sharjah. The sense of the past is palpable here, and the adjacent archaeological site is a treasure trove of ancient rock carvings.
