Dhow cruise, Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Traditional dhow cruise around Oman’s Musandam Peninsula

Dhow cruise, Musandam Peninsula, Oman

Cruise the crystalline waters of this dramatic coastline alongside dolphins and turtles.

Jutting into the Strait of Hormuz, at the northeastern tip of Oman, the Musandam Peninsula sees craggy mountains tumbling down to meet the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea in a series of dramatic fjords, bays, and islands. Your day will be spent on board a traditional wooden dhow (sail boat), gently cruising the coastline. Along the way, you’ll dip in and out of the coves and stop regularly to soak up the views and dive into the sea.

The crystal-clear water here is a haven for marine life, with steep underwater drop-offs, caves, and reefs. You might find spinner, bottlenose, and common dolphins bow-riding alongside the boat, or spot green and hawksbill turtles, octopuses, cuttlefish, and a myriad of reef fish darting among the soft corals.

This trip can be made from RAK, Dubai, or Fujairah and will start early at your hotel, where you’ll be picked up and driven to the border with Oman at Al Dara. Once in Oman, you’ll drive another 40 minutes to the small port of Khasab via a scenic route, with the Hajar Mountains on one side and the Gulf on the other. Here, you’ll board your dhow cruise, and until 4pm you’ll drift around the Musandam Peninsula, past small fishing villages and historic sandstone forts. Your trip includes a buffet lunch, drinks, and refreshments and is shared with up to 35 other passengers. On your return to Khasab, you’ll be driven back across the border and returned to your hotel.
