Arabian Desert near Dubai, UAE

A day in the Arabian Desert

Discover the desert’s wildlife, cultural heritage, or adrenaline-pumping activities.

Beyond the staggering modern architecture and historical trading communities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi lies the ever-present desert. Venturing out from either city into this wild landscape for the day gives you a distinct insight into the heart and soul of the UAE. And you can choose to experience it in a way that speaks to your interests.

It might see you driving in an air-conditioned 4x4 (or a vintage open-top Land Rover), gently taking in the majesty of the soaring dunes within the desert’s conservation reserve. You’ll have the chance to spot native wildlife including oryx, gazelle, and foxes, together with an array of birdlife, from bustards to vultures. Alternatively, you might stop and take part in sandboarding or archery. Or perhaps the thrill of dune-bashing might appeal, where skilled drivers take you on exhilarating 4x4 rides, theatrically climbing and cascading the vast dunes.

As evening falls, you’ll arrive at a camp in the heart of the desert to experience the heritage and food of the country’s more traditional culture. There might be falconry displays, camel rides, henna artists, music, or dance performances before the sunset darkens the sands and crackling bonfires flicker beneath the stars. As pathways of lanterns illuminate the tents, you’ll feast on an authentic dinner of grilled meats and aromatic salads.

Again, you can choose your experience at camp, ranging from a large group buffet to a private meal within a regal desert retreat. The tour lasts for seven hours and includes transportation from and to your city hotel.
