Fonab Castle, Pitlochry

Fonab Castle

The UK

Hidden away on the edge of Loch Faskally, Fonab Castle is a grand property offering guests a luxurious stay in beautiful surroundings. The main building is traditional in appearance but its contemporary wings are built from wood and glass, to blend with the landscape and make the most of the loch views.

Fonab Brasserie and the lounge bar have glass walls for guests to savor the view while sampling some of the many whiskies or gins — the hotel has the largest gin collection in Scotland. In addition, Sandeman’s Fine Dining is an award-winning restaurant which offers a sumptuous tasting menu. Guest rooms and suites are all spacious, and many have either a terrace or balcony.

Rooms

There are 13 rooms within the main castle building, 13 in the woodland extension wing and eight lodge rooms in the grounds. Woodland rooms and suites have either a ground floor patio or a balcony. The best views are, for the most part, from the woodland rooms, most of which overlook the loch. Woodland suites do not have loch views, and castle rooms and castle signature rooms mainly look across the hotel’s surrounding foliage. Rooms are beautifully decorated with bright decor and often feature bold, patterned wallpaper. Every room category features Egyptian cotton linen and a Nespresso coffee machine.

Location

Fonab Castle has a lochside location, in the middle of a forest just a five-minute drive from Pitlochry. It is possible to walk into Pitlochry in around 15 minutes, although the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle bus. The property is just over an hour from Aviemore in the north of the Cairngorms, and under two hours’ drive north of Edinburgh.

Food and drink

Fonab Brasserie overlooks the loch through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Here, guests can dine from a fantastic menu in a more informal setting, or sample one of four different afternoon tea options. Sandeman’s Fine Dining restaurant has more traditional decor, and offers a six-course tasting menu. The lounge bar has an extensive collection of wines and whiskies and boasts Scotland’s largest gin collection.

Facilities and activities

Fonab Spa features treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room and an indoor swimming pool.

The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle bus to take guests to and from Pitlochry, if you don’t fancy the 15-minute walk. There is also a fairly extensive list of activities that can be booked through the hotel, available from the concierge team at the front desk.
