Aoibheann

New Zealand Specialist

My name is Aoibheann. It’s pronounced ‘even.' If I had a penny for every time I’ve said that...well, I'd have quite a few by now. My name is Irish, and so are my parents, who gave me the travel bug from an early age.

I’ve always loved exploring new places and have been lucky to visit over 35 countries so far. During college, I studied abroad three times, including a semester at sea, where I spent four months living and taking classes on a ship while travelling to 13 different countries. My favourite trip was when I spent an entire month in New Zealand in an immersive class about bioluminescence, which sparked a new passion for the country and its people.

After graduating from the University of San Diego, I moved to Boston to start my dream job at Audley, where I get to help others experience the world the same way I do, through authentic and meaningful travel.

Maori house in Rotorua

Your best piece of travel advice?

I encourage you to try new things, talk to locals, engage with the culture, taste the food, ask questions, and embrace the experience. Travelling is one of the most special gifts. Every trip teaches us something new about the world, others, and ourselves. Enjoy the journey and soak up every second.

Dolphin pod, Kaikoura

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

Swimming with a wild pod of dolphins in Kaikoura, New Zealand. I woke up before sunrise and watched the first bit of light warm the mountain as I drove down the coast. The boat ride out to the dolphins was beautiful, I saw lots of sea life, even a humpback whale. Soon I was surrounded by dolphins, riding the bow of the boat and leaping out of the water. I jumped in the cold water and watched the pod of dolphin's dart around me. I could hear their high-pitched clicks as they swam past. It was surreal being so close to these wild animals in their own world.

What’s the best local dish you’ve tasted?

New Zealand is an underrated foodie hotspot. The quality of the ingredients is incredible because being an island, most of the food is locally sourced. New Zealand’s strong farming culture means everything. I had the best steak of my life in Rotorua.
