Without wanting to begin with a horrific cliché… travel has been the spice of my life for as long as I can remember.

I've been lucky to travel to most corners of the world, but the more I travel, the more I realise how much there is still to discover.

There's nothing more I love than digging deep into the details of a new location or region, planning an exciting, varied and fresh itinerary for it and then setting off and diving headfirst into everything it has to offer. I'm certainly at my happiest when enjoying new experiences, discovering new cultures and making memories.

Having said that, there has always been something about Australasia in general that keeps me going back.

I've years of experience exploring all of Australia's hidden secrets (as well as its popular spots) and I’m now absolutely loving putting all my skills and experience together at Audley to help bring these trips alive for others.

Q&A with Sam

Sam visiting Uluru, Australia

What tips would you give for people who want to visit your specialty destination?

Allow some time at the start of your trip to settle in, as well as some free time sprinkled throughout. You want to be at your best, and that takes rest. Australia is a big place with so much to offer, so it's sure to delight every kind of traveller. However, given its size and diversity, it's good to have an idea of what your priorities are for your trip so you can make the absolute most of what you want to do and where you want to do them.

Mokoro trips in the Okavango Delta

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

While in a Mokoro (a dug-out tree trunk used as a boat) on the Okavango Delta in Botswana, I had a very close call with a hippo. My guide accidently took my group slightly off the beaten path and got too close to a hidden, but extremely protective mother with her baby. To say we received a warning call that made the Delta shake, as well as a false charge for good measure, would be putting it mildly. Time stood still, that's for sure, so that would have to be my most vivid memory.

Asakusa Temple, Japan

Where would you love to travel next?

I find it impossible to choose just one: Costa Rica? Japan? Tanzania? Georgia? There are still so many places to choose from.
