BrijRama Palace

Varanasi, India

One of the oldest man-made structures in Varanasi, and over 200 years old, what is now the BrijRama Palace offers a comfortable, traditional and well-located hotel in the heart of the city.

The décor is sympathetic to its heritage with intricate details and beautiful artwork throughout. The inner courtyard often plays host to traditional music and dance performances. Traditional flute lessons are also available, guests can enjoy yoga at sunrise, afternoon tea or learn about (and even have a go at) mehendi artwork. The roof terrace is undoubtedly a highlight of the hotel, with panoramic views of the city, ghats and river below.

OUR OPINION:

If you like to be immersed into local culture, history and tradition, the BrijRama Palace is a great option. Its location and roof terrace views are fantastic.

Rooms

The 32 rooms and suites have plenty of charm, character and comfort. Traditional patterns adorn curtains, rugs and luxurious bedding and dark-wood furniture gives a regal feel. The hotel’s location means rooms either have city or river views and some have a private terrace too. Amenities include air conditioning, Wi-Fi and tea/coffee facilities.

Location

BrijRama Palace sits right on the Darbhanga Ghat, towering over the Ganges. Being in such a central location means it’s easy to get around the city and explore, but also means the wonderful hustle and bustle of Varanasi is present too. Some of the key highlights aren’t far away. It’s easy to get to the aarti on the Dashashwamedh Ghat by boat, for example.

Food and drink

There are multiple dining options at BrijRama. Darbhanga offers dishes from around the world and Chota Angan, meaning ‘small courtyard’, is the hotel’s fusion restaurant. Guests can enjoy an ambient setting here, while enjoying signature dishes from the extensive menu. For special occasions, dinner can be enjoyed on the Udayan terrace, aboard a riverboat or breakfast on the ghats can be arranged. Being in a holy city means there is no alcohol served and all cuisine is vegetarian.

In the early evening the ghats (or bathing steps) come alive once more as hundreds of pilgrims return for evening worship. Young priests from nearby ashrams perform their daily rituals looking out to the sacred Ganga, whilst conch shells and bells create a cacophony of sound.
