Set in mature gardens, Rothman Manor is a small guesthouse located just off the N2 Highway in Swellendam. The guesthouse comprises three thatched Cape Dutch cottages and with just six rooms, is a peaceful, intimate retreat. Décor is light, but African prints and masks in the public areas provide interesting and unique focal points.

There are lots of areas in which to relax, including comfortable lounges, outside courtyards, a library and a swimming pool. The verdant gardens provide a tranquil setting, while the outdoor hot tub overlooks a paddock with zebra and springboks.

Andreas and Franziska own and manage the lodge. They're a friendly, welcoming couple who are full of information about the surrounding area and who will ensure that a warm and personal service is central to every stay here.

OUR OPINION:

A beautiful and relaxing place to base yourself while exploring the Overberg. It offers a very friendly service, with all Audley guests receiving a complimentary bottle of wine if staying for two or more nights.

Rooms

The six rooms are light, bright and contemporary, with simple lines and African artwork, and are elegantly furnished to a high standard. Each has its own personality. Cane room is a twin room located on the ground floor, featuring an en suite shower and a patio looking out to the pool. Suite Africa can have either a king size bed or twin beds and offers air conditioning, a separate bath and shower in the en suite and a patio with views of the pool and eco reserve. Suite Romance has a king size bed, air conditioning and en suite shower, with a light and airy decor.

The luxurious Suite Esprit offers 50 square meters of space, featuring a king size four-poster bed or twin beds, air conditioning, a separate shower and bath and a patio with views over the pond and eco reserve. There's also Suite Morning Sky, which is aimed at honeymoon couples, offering the same amount of living space and amenities but with the addition of a spa bath and its own sun deck. Finally, the XL Loft Suite is an impressive 90 square meters, boasting its own kitchen, separate living area with a mountain view, spa bath and a balcony overlooking the pool area.

Location

Rothman Manor is located in the town of Swellendam, halfway between Cape Town and George. It makes a convenient stop if you're en route to the Garden Route along the south coast.

Food and drink

Guests can enjoy a full breakfast each morning, including pastries, muffins, fruits and fresh juice. While there's no restaurant on site, there are plenty of excellent dining options nearby to choose from and the owners will be more than happy to make recommendations.

Honeymooners

Honeymooners receive a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. The Suite Morning Sky is particularly suited to couples on their honeymoon, featuring its own sun deck and patio.

Facilities and activities

The property provides complimentary Wi-Fi access as well as a complimentary iPad for you to use during your stay. In the grounds you'll find a saltwater pool and a hot tub, as well as a pretty koi pond and various water features. A laundry service is also available.
