Rivertrees is a cozy country estate and farm, set in extensive natural gardens along the banks of the Usa River. Located between Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport, on a clear day you can enjoy stunning views of both Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.

The rooms are spread out across the pretty gardens and each have their own individual character. They're beautifully furnished with large wooden beds and a luxurious, colonial-style decor. A large baobab opposite the main reception provides a dramatic focus, and you can make use of the swimming pool throughout your stay. An open area provides a great space for barbecues and alfresco dining, complete with a large pizza oven, while on cooler evenings dinner is served in the main dining room, which is inside the beautifully restored main farmhouse.

OUR OPINION:

The soft sound of the river and wholesome home cooking makes Rivertrees an ideal place to relax. We find that the staff here are warm and friendly, while the beautiful gardens provide a relaxing, peaceful atmosphere.

Rooms

Rooms are housed in various converted farm buildings dotted around the grounds. All are very comfortably furnished with colonial-style touches and rich fabrics, featuring spacious en suite bathrooms, the majority of which come complete with a bathtub.

The two separate River Cottages offer plenty of privacy and are an ideal option for honeymooners, featuring an outdoor rain shower and spacious river deck nestled within the leafy grounds. For cooler evenings, the cottages also each benefit from a cozy fireplace.

Friends or families traveling together can stay in the private River House, which is set right on the banks of the Usa River. It's a large building, with two spacious bedrooms complete with luxurious en suite bathrooms and a central lounge, dining and bar area. This is a great option if you'd prefer to dine privately with your group and have more space to yourself in which to relax. The River House also has a deck area overlooking the river, which is a lovely place to relax at the end of the day.

Location

Halfway between Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha Town, Rivertrees is a quiet option in the heart of the countryside, yet still offering convenient access to both. This is a great place to relax and recover from your international flights before commencing on a northern Tanzania safari or Kilimanjaro climb.

Food and drink

The food at Rivertrees is superb. Dinner is either served alfresco or in the main dining room in the renovated main farmhouse. The highlight is the outdoor pizza oven, serving some of the best pizza around. All the meals contain plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs grown locally on the farm.

Families

Some of the rooms interconnect, and the two bedroom River House is the best option for larger families.

Facilities and activities

The property boasts a lovely pool for cooling off in the heat of the day and extensive, shady gardens where you can relax with a book. For those who'd prefer to be a little more active, it's possible to follow a short trail around the grounds and along the river, where you can spot the local birdlife. If you're interested in learning more about the local culture you can arrange a visit to a local farming village and take a tour of an organic coffee nursery.
