Carol

India, Nepal & Bhutan Specialist

With over 15 years of experience at Audley Travel, I’ve built a career around my passion for discovering the world and helping others do the same. A seasoned traveller and keen backpacker, I’ve explored extensively across many destinations, always looking for authentic experiences and adventures off the beaten track.

My love of the outdoors has taken me trekking through some of the world's most spectacular landscapes and summiting mountains along the way. Whether navigating remote trails or immersing myself in local cultures, the most memorable journeys combine adventure, connection, and discovery.

At Audley, my specialisms are India, Nepal, and Bhutan, from the serene backwaters of Kerala and the vibrant cities of India to the dramatic Himalayan landscapes of Nepal and Bhutan, and the breathtaking high-altitude plateau of Ladakh.

Outside of work, I’m a proud mother of two boys who share my enthusiasm for travel and exploration. Together, we embrace new destinations, cultures, and experiences whenever possible. Always planning the next adventure, I’m driven by a genuine curiosity about the world and a desire to uncover its hidden treasures.

Norbulingka Institute, Dharamshala

I recommend visiting - Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj, India

Home to the Dalai Lama, Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj are stunning neighbouring towns set in the mountains of the Himalayan Foothills. Feeling worlds away from the hustle and bustle of India as you know it; Dharamsala is a place of calm and tranquillity. In monsoon season you must wake up early to view the incredible mountain scenery before the mist takes over and make sure you wrap up warm as the hills can be chilly. It has the feel of an alpine resort with plenty of places to walk around and soak up the wonderful atmosphere.

Super Deluxe room, Fort Barli, Barli

I recommend staying at - Fort Barli, India

Medium

At Fort Barli in Rajasthan you can explore the village of Barli by foot or by bullock cart and will get to meet the local cobbler and visit the local temple. You can not help but feel humbled by the welcome you will receive from the local children and villagers.

On return to the Fort you have a variety of other activities to choose from such as dressing in traditional Indian wedding attire and traditional henna paintings. You will be treated like one of the Maharani that lived here and will always remember the beautiful surrounds of this unique stay.

I'll never forget when…

Trekking in the Himalaya has got to be the highlight of my travels. We trekked for 12 days solid through constantly changing and incredible mountains and scenery. The view of Everest in the distance spurred me on and I felt humbled to be in its shadow. Although it was hugely challenging, every day was a huge reward and I always felt as though I had really deserved those frozen chocolate bars that I came to know and love. It was an experience that even now provokes goose bumps and one that I am sure I will always remember.
