Volcano Cerro Negro Hike
Volcano Cerro Negro Hike, Nicaragua
Cerro Negro is the second youngest volcano in the American Continent. It was formed in April of 1850 and has erupted 18 times, the last one in 1999. This active volcano (726 metres in altitude) is totally covered with black sand and rocks and climbing it is an impressive experience.
Rising out of the green trees the black walls of Cerro Negro create a bizarre contrast with the surroundings. You hike first on trails and later on a kind of black dune created by former lava. As you reach the foot of the volcano you begin an easy climb up to the first of two active and colourful craters. From here follow the edge of the crater to get to the second crater and highest point of the volcano.
Standing on top of Cerro Negro you will have an unforgettable view stretching right over the volcanic chain. You will spend approximately one hour around the main crater before returning.
The volcanic material will give you the opportunity for a spectacular descent through the loose rocks and sand of Cerro Negro's black slopes in a ski-like manner!
