Japan Specialist

I’ve always been super into Japan, what started as a huge love for anime pretty much opened the door to everything else about the country. I just kept falling more and more in love with it, from the modern history to the tech scene, and especially the food. I’m a big foodie, a bit of a tech nerd, and a huge anime and manga fan, so Japan just feels like the perfect place to explore.

Whether it’s wandering around busy streets in Tokyo, finding hidden spots, or just hunting down the best bowl of ramen, I always feel excited to be there. Now I get to help other people experience Japan the way I see it, which is honestly the coolest part of this job.

Q&A with Carlton

Geisha in backstreets of Kyoto

Your best piece of travel advice?

Do some research on Japanese customs and etiquette before you go. Japan is super welcoming, but there are little things like: how to line up, when to take your shoes off, or even how to hand someone money, that can really make your trip smoother and show respect to the culture. Also, always keep an umbrella with you. Trust me, it’ll save you more times than you think!

What's the one thing you always pack?

They always say, “Never leave home without your towel” in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but after travelling around Japan, I’ve learned to never leave without an umbrella. Quick showers can pop up out of nowhere, and having an umbrella on hand has saved me more times than I can count. It’s also perfect for blocking the sun on those really hot days. I used to think my camera was the most important thing to bring, but honestly, the umbrella is now my number one travel essential.

Hiroshima memorial

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

Visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum really stuck with me. I knew it would be heavy going in, but nothing really prepares you for the experience. It’s not just a museum; it’s something you feel. Walking through it, seeing the stories, and realizing how recent it all was really hit me. It’s such an important place that left a deep impression on me, and I think it’s somewhere everyone should visit when they go to Japan.
