Billy

Mexico & Costa Rica specialist

Growing up in South Africa, Turkey and the UK exposed me early on to different cultures, landscapes and ways of life, and sparked a lasting curiosity to explore the world beyond the familiar.

That curiosity eventually led me to travel more widely, and over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to visit more than 45 countries, spending extended time exploring Central and South America and Southeast Asia. Travelling independently allowed me to experience destinations more deeply, from navigating vibrant cities and local food markets to discovering remote landscapes and wildlife.

More recently, I’ve explored Mexico and Costa Rica, uncovering the incredible diversity each country offers, from historic cities and archaeological sites to lush rainforests and beautiful coastlines.

These experiences continue to shape how I understand and appreciate each destination, and they’re what keep drawing me back to Mexico and Costa Rica.

Q&A with Billy

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile

What is your most vivid travel moment?

One moment that really stayed with me was in Patagonia, driving out early to see Mount Fitzroy at sunrise. After a long, icy drive in the dark, we arrived just as the sun rose, lighting the mountain in a bright orange glow, with completely clear skies. We later found out those conditions hadn’t happened in over a year, which made the timing feel even more special.

Zebra, Tanzania

Where would you love to travel next?

Africa. Having grown up partly in Cape Town, it’s a part of the world I feel a strong connection to, but haven’t explored nearly enough. I’d love to travel more widely across the continent and experience its landscapes, wildlife and cultures in greater depth — ideally with a Springboks match along the way.

Mexican tacos

What's the best local dish you've tasted?

Tacos al pastor in Mexico City. They’re simple but incredibly flavourful, but what I find most interesting is their history — the cooking style actually comes from Lebanese immigrants who introduced shawarma-style spits to Mexico, which eventually evolved into one of the country’s most iconic dishes.
