On the beach - 8 days

Huvafen Fushi

The visionary Huvafen Fushi offers cutting-edge design and chic minimalism in extravagant surroundings. Boasting the world’s first underwater spa, an infinity pool lit by fibre optics and an over-water gym, this is high-tech living on an idyllic castaway island.

Along with pure indulgence and utter tranquillity the resort offers all the modern facilities you would expect: four restaurants, an impressively stocked wine cellar, and a spectacular infinity pool. Yet far more important is the way things are done here. In every sense the hotel surpasses expectations. The underwater spa treatment rooms double up as an aquarium where you can take a champagne tour with the resident marine biologist to explore the reef after dark. The dive centre offers specialised underwater photography courses, there are guided snorkelling trips, a saltwater flotation pool, windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and fishing.

All bungalows and pavilions come with Bose surround sound systems and an iPod with a varied music collection; all have private plunge pools and vaulted ceilings, designer furnishings and some have outdoor bathrooms with waterfall showers.

Before the beach - 3 days

Leave the city behind and take an early morning 4x4 drive into breathtaking landscapes of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve before joining a camel caravan and feasting on a traditional Bedouin ‘futoor’ breakfast in the heart of the desert. Discover Dubai’s long history as a guide takes you to the historic heart of the Bastakia district where narrow lanes and traditional courtyard houses offer the perfect introduction to the city. From here pass the magnificent Zabeel Palace and cross the Creek to the bustling city souqs.

Set within Dubai’s bustling Creekside area, the Jumeirah Creekside has a striking, contemporary design with over 200 modern art pieces throughout the hotel. The large, outdoor pool is a welcome break from a day exploring the city and the 292 rooms are spacious and modern.

Huvafen Fushi

44 rooms, 6 restaurants, 2 pools

One of the most chic resorts in the Maldives, Huvafen Fushi is contemporary and luxurious, but its intelligent design still allows for quite a natural feel. With just 44 rooms this is also one of the smaller properties in the Maldives with modern facilities of the highest standard.

The beautiful infinity pool is lit-up by fibre optic lighting in the hours of darkness. A saltwater floatation pool sits adjacent to the main pool and is a wonderfully relaxing experience. The over-water fully equipped gymnasium puts exercise in a different perspective. One of the best things about the resort is its excellent spa, Lime, with two sub-aquatic treatment rooms allowing a unique 'underwater spa' experience.

Huvafen Fushi sits in the North Malé Atoll, 30-40 minutes by speedboat from Malé International airport. The resort is +1 hour ahead of Malé time, to allow for a later sunset and more 'sun hours'. This also works well with early morning flights out of Malé.

Our opinion

Huvafen Fushi has justifiably earned its reputation as one of the top island resorts in the Maldives, it offers some of the best beach and water villas available in the Maldives, each being very well appointed. The blend of the modern amenities with natural touches mean that Huvafen Fushi offers you a foot-in-the-sand luxury experience. If you are looking for crystal clear azure reefs, powder soft sandy beaches and a quality choice of restaurants in unique settings, then Huvafen Fushi will not let you down.

All rooms — be it one of the stylish beach bungalows or unique overwater bungalows — are contemporary in design with classic touches and some great gadgets. All come with Bose surround sound systems and an iPod filled with a varied music collection.

The bedroom on the lower level has a private indoor/outdoor bathroom and a private deck. For relaxing, the lounge has a fully stocked library, Bose sound system and comfy sofas. Outside, the decks have sunbeds and more seating so you can enjoy the tropical warmth. The pavilion comes with a butler on call 24 hours a day.

Two Bedroom Ocean Pavilion with Pool

The two Ocean Pavilions are for those looking for acres of space and complete privacy. They are set 200 metres away from the island and are accessed via a private walkway only for guests staying in the pavilions. Facing the sunset, they have some of the finest views in the resort and endless areas and toys to make the most of the panorama. At 330 square metres, there is lots of space. Outside you'll find several decks, with barbecue grill, daybeds, sun loungers, Jacuzzi and a superb infinity pool that goes from the outside into the living room. Once you step out of the pool, in the living room you can relax on the comfortable sofas with something from the library. There is a dining room and two bedrooms; the master bedroom has a Kohler infinity bath that fills from the ceiling. The butler is on call to arrange anything you could want 24 hours a day.

For a small resort, there is a rich variety of dining options, and Huvafen Fushi has one of the most comprehensive wine cellars in the Maldives.

Celsius is the main restaurant, offering a variety of dishes from soups and pasta to seafood, curries and steaks. Raw offers healthy, organic food that still manages to pack a punch in the flavour department; the sunset deck at Raw is an unbeatable spot to watch the sun go down. Forno's offers contemporary Napolitano cuisine beneath a canopy of palms on the beach while Feeling Koi, the Japanese restaurant, is set over-water with an open kitchen and ocean views.

UMBar is the place to go for a cocktail, snack or sundowner, open-air screenings of films and chill-out music played by visiting DJs, while The Lair is a fantastic place to read a book or watch live sports with a drink.

Experience lasting rejuvenation through massage, body exotics, facial treatments, yoga and fitness.

Location: Dubai

On the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai was, until recently, an oil rich desert state with little tourist infrastructure, but in only a few decades it has transformed itself into one of the world’s leading beach destinations.

If you are travelling to the Musandam Peninsula in Oman or flying to Muscat with Emirates airlines you will be landing in Dubai and it makes for a natural break for a few days’ relaxation. Dubai’s hotels are renowned and include some of the most lavish properties in the world, either on the beach, around Dubai Creek, or in the splendid isolation of the desert.

Never understated, Dubai makes a bold statement with an extensive list of activities including excellent restaurants, shopping, championship golf courses, and an indoor real snow ski slope.

Jumeirah Creekside

Accommodation: Jumeirah Creekside

This smart, modern hotel is located in Dubai’s bustling Creekside area. Only 15 minutes' drive from the airport, yet within easy reach of many of Dubai’s attractions it is a good base for a few days' stopover in Dubai. It also operates a 24-hour check-in system so that instead of set check in and check out times, guests’ check out time is same time of day at which they checked in. This can be very convenient for those with flights that don’t fit the normal hotel check in or check out times.

The hotel has a striking décor with 200-300 art pieces set throughout the hotel. The lovely outdoor pool with cabanas around it sits next to a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as the pool bar. There is a large gym at the hotel as well as an exercise studio, spa, six tennis courts and a squash court.

The 292 rooms have a contemporary Arabian décor and offer not only free tea and coffee but also free soft drinks from the minibar. Superior rooms are a spacious 40-49 sq m while Deluxe rooms are larger and stylish. Please note that in Deluxe Rooms, the bath is open to the room although it can be separated by a curtain (the shower & toilet are behind separate doors).
