When is the best time to visit Uruguay?

The best time to travel to Uruguay - particularly to its coastal areas - is during its summer months between November and February, with many of the beach resorts effectively closing for much of the year as soon as summer slips into autumn.

However, travel is possible year-round; especially if focusing on more cultural sites and cities.

I love Uruguay in November. Temperatures are pleasant for exploring its towns and cities, the crowds haven't yet hit the country's beaches and there's still a chance to spot the whales that visit the coast every year.

Visiting Uruguay in January - February

This is the warmest and driest time of the year to visit Uruguay. Go horse riding and wine tasting against a backdrop of blue skies, but make sure to book very early to get the best choice of hotels on the beach.

Events & Festivals

  • Montevideo Carnival (around Easter): Montevideo's carnival takes place annually in February and March, although Uruguay is proud of holding the longest carnival in South America, with some celebrations starting as early as late January. Read more »
