Named after the fort that was built on the beach ('praia') by the Portuguese in 1556 to warn the city of Salvador of impending invasion, Praia do Forte is now a relaxed fishing village which has a reputation for the preservation of the local flora and fauna.

Green turtle at Projeto TamarInland from the coast is an area of protected forest, there is also a marshy area home to many seabirds and caiman. On the edge of the village is the Tamar Project, a preservation center for sea turtles that lay their eggs in the nearby golden beaches.

There are many turtles at the center, from day-old babies to fully grown adults. The town of Praia do Forte itself is a laid back place with many little restaurants and souvenir shops.
