On an authentic reindeer farm, your eyes are opened to the everyday lives of Lapland’s remote reindeer herders.
Setting out with your private driver, you head to a remote reindeer farm near Saariselkä. Here, the reindeer roam among still, fir-studded landscapes silenced by snow. You’ll get a chance to meet some of the herd and find out how reindeer herders care for their animals, as well as learn how to handle a reindeer-pulled sleigh to earn your “reindeer driving license”.
On your arrival at the authentic working farm, you’re greeted by a reindeer herder, who’ll share details about their way of life and the importance of reindeer in rural Finland. They might show you how to harness a reindeer using a suopunki (traditional Lappish lasso), and you can feed some of the animals, with plenty of opportunities to take photos.
You then take a seat on a reindeer-pulled sleigh for a short but relaxing 3-km (2-mile) ride through the wilderness. Afterwards, you can warm up with a hot drink as you sit around a bonfire inside a traditional Lappish hut.
The entire experience lasts around two hours and includes private transfers to and from your hotel.
