Posed on the edge of Lac d’Annecy is Auberge du Père Bise, an impressive Relais & Chateau property known for its high levels of comfort and long-standing gastronomic excellence. A short water taxi or scenic drive away from the busier Annecy and its wealth of restaurants and shops, this secluded property offers the best of both worlds.

Fine food, fine wine and a relaxed but sophisticated ambience are the hallmarks of this hotel, run by chef Jean Suplice and his wife. There are 23 spacious rooms and suites divided between two buildings, all decorated in contemporary style in muted neutral tones with pops of rich blues, reds and greys. Large windows bathe the rooms in natural light, and in most, balconies overlook the lake.

The hotel restaurant has two Michelin stars and serves a menu of bold and vibrant dishes influenced by the surrounding landscape and wild ingredients foraged locally. There is also the more informal Le Bistrot 1903, named for the year the hotel was built. In addition to its two restaurants, the hotel also offers daily breakfast buffet in the dining room and in the warmer months, the buffet is served on the large outdoor terrace.

There are 23 rooms and suites at Auberge du Père Bise spread between the main hotel and a newer annex. All rooms have deceptively simple modern decor with splashes of rich blues and bold reds but the attention to detail is noticeable with designer chairs and plush fabrics, subtle lighting and large windows that give the rooms a calm and airy feeling. Many rooms have spacious balconies and most have views of Lac d’Annecy. All rooms feature modern white marble bathrooms, and have air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.


Perched on the edge of Lac d’Annecy, Auberge du Père Bise offers easy access to nearby Annecy by water taxi but remains far from the crowds that flock the region in warmer months. With large gardens, lake and mountain views and a medieval village setting, it offers utter serenity but is also conveniently placed for exploring the town.

Food and drink

The first hotel in France to be awarded a Michelin star, the Auberge du Père Bise has been renowned for the quality of its food since it opened in 1903. Today, the Restaurant Jean Suplice holds two Michelin stars and takes diners on a gastronomic journey with dishes focused on bold, natural ingredients. Le Bistrot 1903 works under the same chef as the gastronomic restaurant but has a less formal menu and atmosphere with meals served in a large bar area and a dining room with modern wooden tables and chairs.

Facilities and activities

Situated right on the lake, the hotel has a small private grassy beach with sunloungers, a private dock, and offers a choice of water sports, including fishing and paddle boarding, as well as hiking and cycling in the surrounding mountains.

Our opinion

We love Auberge du Père Bise for its tranquil atmosphere and indulgent sophistication and comfort. A visit guarantees a relaxing stay with large rooms, a private beach and superb food.
