Responsible Choice

We've hand-selected a range of tours and stays across the world that go above and beyond to be a force for good by supporting local businesses, educating staff, challenging local norms, or promoting conservation and biodiversity efforts. Your Responsible Choice helps increase the positive impact of your trip.

The backdrop to Hotel San Rocco really is its highlight. Situated on the edge of Lake Orta the views of the lake and San Giulio Island in the distance can’t help but make you feel relaxed. The hotel also has a wide range of facilities including a floating jetty where you can sit and enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset.

The rooms vary depending on which building you choose to stay in. The Villa rooms are a little dated but do have some lovely features including marble floors whereas the rooms in the central building are very modern.

OUR OPINION:

Lake Orta offers a more secluded environment than the bigger lakes and the Hotel San Rocco provides the facilities and location needed for a bit of respite, whilst still offering good access to explore the local area.

Rooms

There are a number of room options available at the Hotel San Rocco but a lake view is a definite advantage. The rooms in the Villa are a little tired whereas those in the main building are far more contemporary and more recently renovated. We would recommend opting for a Superior Room over a Classic Room as these can be a little small and overly minimal. All rooms have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has eight interconnecting rooms, which provide a convenient option for families or groups.

Location

With a prime position on the shore of Lake Orta and just a ten-minute walk to the main square in Orta San Giulio, the hotel’s location is quiet but accessible to cafés, restaurants and shops. From the main square you can also take local boats to other towns and villages on the lake including the quaint and pretty island of San Giulio which is an absolute must.

Food and drink

The main restaurant serves a buffet breakfast from 7am until 10am and lunch and dinner is predominantly Italian food. Large windows flood the tables with light during the day providing panoramic views of the lake. During the summer it’s also possible to enjoy a light bite by the pool or evening cocktails or an apéritif on the terrace while watching the sunset.

Facilities and activities

Located on the grounds, overlooking the lake, the outdoor pool and loungers are a relaxing option if you’ve been busy exploring the local area. If you are feeling energetic, however, you can hire kayaks and pedalos or just take a swim in the lake from the private jetty. The hotel also has a pool table, and an outdoor Jacuzzi on the roof garden, available in summer months, upon reservation.
