Le Pozze di Lecchi, Tuscany

Le Pozze di Lecchi

Italy

A ruined granary, the property was rebuilt by the current owner from the original stones, using traditional Tuscan building methods, to create this small and utterly charming retreat. The huge care and attention that was taken in renovating the property is today mirrored in the warmth and attentiveness shown by the staff here.

The property itself is tucked away in peaceful isolation on the edge of a densely wooded hillside, overlooking the babbling mill stream which used to provide the power for grinding the corn. The swimming pool is fed by a natural spring that cascades over a rock waterfall into the pool, and there's also a small spa.

OUR OPINION:

This understated property has huge amounts of charm and character. The staff are warm and welcoming and do their absolute utmost to look after you. The food, while simple and traditional in style, is incredibly tasty and a real highlight.

Rooms

The rooms are simply but comfortably furnished in a classic Tuscan style, with tiled floors, dark wooden doors and large shuttered windows that offer views of the steep wooded hillsides surrounding the property. They increase in size from Classic and Comfort doubles to the spacious Junior suites, which have large bathrooms and a bath rather than a shower. The majority of rooms are in the main building, with some in the annex next door.

Location

You approach Le Pozze di Lecchi along a narrow gravel path through vineyards and wooded hillsides, creating a sense of seclusion. However, the small hamlet of Lecchi is just over the brow of the hill and can be reached by foot. The picturesque little towns of Radda and Gaiole are around 15 minutes’ drive away, Siena is around 35 minutes away and Florence just over an hour.

Food and drink

Breakfast is served under the arched brick ceiling of the small dining room, which opens out onto a paved terrace area for outdoor dining in the summer months. The buffet spread is tasty but simple, with plenty of croissants, pastries, bread, meats and cheeses, along with eggs cooked to order. In the evening, the restaurant offers a lovely menu of hearty Tuscan dishes.

Facilities and activities

A highlight of the property is the swimming pool, which is fed by a natural spring and is a great place to cool off in the summer months. For those looking for more pampering, there's a small spa underneath the property, complete with a large stone hot tub, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a sensory shower.
