Karen Blixen Camp, Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Karen Blixen Camp is located is a pretty valley outside the main Mara Reserve and overlooking the Mara River.
The camp's surroundings are green and lush and the views over the river are stunning. This is a relatively new camp, Danish-owned but welcoming to guests of all nationalities and in particular attracting those with an interest in Karen Blixen herself. Evening talks are regularly held before dinner to give guests more information about the life of Karen Blixen and also on other topics such as the Migration, wildlife and botany.
The main area of the lodge has a smart and spacious lounge with colonial style furniture, polished wooden floors and pale canvas roof. Here you will also find the reception area, a small library and an adjoining dining room area all with lovely views towards the river. In front of the river, tables have been set up and this is a lovely spot to watch the resident hippo pod and other wildlife coming to the river to drink. There is also a swimming pool with loungers around it set back in the gardens behind the rooms.
There are 22 rooms in total, 19 of these are set along the riverside each with its own deck and daybed so that guests can relax here and enjoy the river view. The tents are fairly close together however inside they are smartly furnished with pale canvas walls and polished wood floors. Each tent has an en suite bathroom area with WC, twin vanity unit and shower. There is also an outdoor shower area at the back of the tent perfect for hot days. The rooms all have electricity and hot water 24 hours a day. Set further back from the river there are also three rooms raised up high on platforms which look out towards the bush giving guests good views to spot the surrounding wildlife.
Activities from Karen Blixen Camp include game drives and night drives in open-top vehicles (maximum 6 persons per vehicle). Full day trips to the Mara Reserve are also available (park fee paid locally). Guests can enjoy a nature walk around camp with a local guide who will tell you more about the medicinal uses of the plants; longer walking safaris are also available.
