Évora and the Alentejo: wine and gourmet tour

Your private driver and guide will pick you up from your Lisbon hotel on the morning of the tour. Your first stop is Évora, the regional capital, which is about a 90-minute drive away. The city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for its incredibly well-preserved Roman architecture, and you’ll visit its most notable structure, the Temple of Diana.

The historic heart of the city dates from the medieval era. Narrow, winding streets are flanked by whitewashed houses typical of the region, numerous churches and chapels, and handsome public squares.

Your guide will lead you around the most significant sights and give you some history and background to the city as you stroll. After your walking tour, you have some free time to enjoy Évora’s reputation as a gastronomic hub with lunch in the historical heart of the town.

The Alentejo has been an important agricultural hub since Roman times, and today it’s known for producing some of Portugal’s best food and wine. After lunch, you’ll continue onto a local winery, once owned by the Jesuits but family-run since the 19th century.

As you tour the cellars, you’ll hear the story of the winery and see how the team there use centuries-old techniques to turn the finest grapes into wine.

At the end of the tour there is the opportunity to sample the wine with a selection of snacks, before being driven back to your hotel in Lisbon.
