East Gate at the Citadel

Crossing to the north bank of the Perfume River, you will enter the imposing moated Citadel, built by Emperor Gia Long in 1804.

Surrounded by walls 20 m thick, the Citadel contains the Forbidden Purple City, home to the Emperor, his concubines and eunuchs! Much of the original structure was destroyed during the Tet Offensive in 1968, although with the help of UNESCO funding it is gradually being restored to its former glory.
