Backed by the mountains of the Annamite Cordillera, and set on the beautiful Perfume River, Hue is the best place to experience the country’s imperial past. Settled in by the Cham people, visited by the Dutch and Portuguese and recently colonised by the French, Hue has a complicated past, but it was the city’s imperial legacy under Mandarin rule which shaped Hue as we know it today. The last imperial family, the Nguyens, ruled under French protection from 1802 to 1945, and their mausoleums can be found in scenic spots all along the main valley. Lavishly squandering their country’s wealth and manpower, these mausoleums are amongst the country’s most poignant sights.
They are not the only historical attractions here, though. You can board a boat and travel to the Thien Mu Pagoda, dating back to 1602, and surrounded by graceful gardens, or explore Hue’s more recent past: the former Demilitarized Zone, the atmospheric tunnels at Vinh Moc and the battle sites of Khe Sanh and the Citadel.
Alongside Hue’s historical sights, the city has become one of the best places in Vietnam to sample the growing art culture. There is opportunity to visit private collections, try your hand at Bamboo paper art (Trucchi) or learn about the lacquer paintings that decorate the palace walls.
For foodies, Hue is home to some of Vietnam’s spiciest dishes, unique flavours and some of the best home cooking and restaurants. Cooking with fresh ingredients straight from the garden is a must do while here.
Lastly, there is an abundance of local life right on the city’s doorstep with numerous cycling routes, lagoons and charming garden homes waiting to be explored.
