Maison de la Luz

Maison de la Luz

New Orleans, The USA

Maison de la Luz is a stylish boutique hotel situated in the Central Business District of New Orleans, just a five-minute walk from the French Quarter. The building was once the annex of New Orleans City Hall, built in 1906.

This 67-room hotel has a luxury residential feel and only guests have access to the building. Upon arrival, you are welcomed into the hallway by friendly doormen to a sweeping oak staircase and a calming atmosphere. There is a cosy living room complete with sofas, a hot beverage table serving a selection of teas, coffee and hot chocolate throughout the day, and an honesty bar in an antique dresser. Adjacent to the living room is the breakfast room, decorated with a calming blue and white colour theme. Breakfast is a choice of continental or à la carte.

There is also a dimly-lit speakeasy where guests can relax and unwind with a cocktail in the evenings. This snug is kept private by a curtain which then opens out to the hotel bar and this is popular with young locals on Friday and Saturday nights.

A small lift takes guests up to the rooms, and each door is tucked behind their own little nook for extra privacy. Rooms are grand and spacious with high ceilings and are designed to reflect typical Southern charm in a contemporary yet elegant fashion.

A complimentary wine, cheese and charcuterie hour can be found in the living room between 5pm and 8pm, which is then replaced by milk and cookies later in the evening.

OUR OPINION:

This luxurious hotel is one-of-a-kind in New Orleans and is ideal for those looking for a trendy, unique hotel. We recommend taking advantage of the complimentary hot beverage service they offer where you can request a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate to be delivered to your room at any time of day.

Rooms

Rooms and suites at Maison de la Luz are grand and charming in equal measure and you can choose from king guest rooms, studio suites or one bedroom suites. The design is unique and may be described as quirky, but the finish is smart and contemporary even though there are a number of allegorical works of art in each room — this artwork depicts the city's motifs including alligators, pelicans and magnolia trees.

Due to the building's architecture, the rooms enjoy high ceilings and tall windows allowing for plenty of natural light to flood in. The bathrooms are spacious and have luxurious amenities as well as walk-in showers with glass panels. Each room also has a minibar with champagne, a gold pineapple champagne bucket and American snacks.

Location

The hotel is located on Carondelet Street in the heart of the Central Business District. The hustle and bustle of the French Quarter is just a five-minute walk away, allowing you to enjoy the busyness during the day, but retreat to peace and quiet in the evenings. There are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby, but for access to shops and sights of the city, you would need to walk into the French Quarter.

Food and drink

The breakfast room at Maison de la Luz is expansive and well-lit. They offer a continental-style buffet, imaginative à la carte options with Southern dishes and breakfast classics.

Bar Marilou is the hotel bar, and is like something hand-plucked out of Paris with velvet accents and animal print soft furnishings — it might sound a little kitsch, but we promise it's very well done, and oozes romance and elegance. This converted library is the perfect place for sampling hand-crafted cocktails until midnight and mingling with young and trendy locals.

Facilities and activities

There is no swimming pool at Maison de la Luz but guests can use the rooftop pool at Ace Hotel next door. For spa treatments, guests can arrange these upon request for in-room pampering.

In order to fully experience the city of New Orleans' culinary delights, Maison de la Luz guests have priority access to James Beard Award Nominated restaurant Josephine Estelle, a seafood restaurant Seaworthy and an intimate music venue and bar named Three Keys.

Guests will also benefit from a bespoke concierge service 24/7.
