Glen Helen Gorge in the West MacDonnell Ranges, Northern Territory

West MacDonnell National Park is situated close to Alice Springs and known for its red-rock gorges, waterholes, and cultural heritage. You’ll journey into the iconic landscapes of the West MacDonnell Ranges as you travel west from Alice Springs. You'll follow the rugged spine of the ranges, passing the John Flynn Memorial, which commemorates the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Your first stop is Simpsons Gap, a striking natural gorge where you can stretch your legs on a gentle walk and take in the dramatic scenery. From here, continue to Angkerle (Standley Chasm), where you'll pause for morning tea and coffee beneath the towering red rock walls.

The day continues to the Ochre Pits, an important Indigenous cultural site, before reaching Ormiston Gorge. Here, you'll enjoy lunch overlooking the waterhole, framed by the gorge's soaring cliffs and ancient landscapes.

In the afternoon, begin your return journey to Alice Springs, stopping at Ellery Creek Big Hole, one of the region's most pristine and picturesque waterholes. If you'd like, there's time for a refreshing swim before continuing back through the Outback scenery.

You'll arrive back at your hotel in Alice Springs in the early evening, bringing to a close a rewarding day exploring the natural highlights of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
