Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Kinabatangan River, Borneo
Set within tropical rainforest the Sukau Rainforest Lodge is one of the best options on the river, in an idyllic and tranquil setting. Built in 1995 it was the first lodge to be designed based on ecotourism principles. All 20 twin-bedded rooms have solar-powered ceiling fans, mosquito netting and en suite facilities with hot water. Other facilities on offer include an open dining area, library and lounge area with cane and bamboo sofas. There is also a hanging garden facing all the rooms and an open sun-deck which doubles as a candle lit eating area at night.
The lodge has recently been awarded status as a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, one of only 25 in the world, and the only one in Southeast Asia. It is the only lodge that uses electric motor on all river boats, and has a great range of facilities for such a remote area (it is the only lodge with a plunge pool and has relaxing and well designed communal areas). Aside from the excellent wildlife spotting the resort offers foot massage, nightly wildlife talks by the in-house expert, and has some lovely trails to explore from the lodge.
